Is There a Difference Between Home Scales and Medical Scales?

If you are like most families, you have a scale at home that you use to check on your body weight now and then, or to watch daily, a specific weight goal that you have set for yourself.  These are generally in the bathroom and are purchased relatively cheap from a local store.  But you may have been shocked to discover that your scale at home could be very different from the scale at your doctor’s office. Why is it that your home scale accuracy is not the same as at your doctor’s office?

There is nothing set in stone with complete certainty that a home scale is simply inaccurate, but the wide differences in measurement can be due to several inconsistencies. It is recommended that you weigh yourself at the same time of the day wearing the same clothes to avoid the major ups and downs that people often see as inconsistencies. But generally speaking, the bathroom scale or home scale is not the same high quality scale as you would see in a medical office and can verily widely in accuracy. Home scales are often mass produced and simply don’t have the same quality standards or intense calibration as do medical scales. With that in mind, it’s critical NOT to use a home scale as a medical scale in a medical facility or imaging department. They are not equal in quality or accuracy.

When it comes to guaranteed accuracy, medical scales are hard to beat and are worth the increased price. At Z&Z Medical, we understand the need for medical grade scales in imaging departments and sell a wide range of high-quality, reliable, professional medical scales to meet every need. You will quickly discover the difference in accuracy & durability and how choosing a medical weighing scale over a ‘cheaper’ home scale can have a major impact on reproducibility that you can rely on. When x-ray tables require patients to be under a certain weight limit, it’s imperative that you have a medical scale that is reliable and accurate.

Our quality medical scales are designed to be used every day, multiple times a day and prove to be a much better value. All medical weighing scales are Class III Approved, making them legal for medical use and more accurate than any home scale. They have undergone the high standard of performance expected from professional medical equipment and provide repeat results when tested. These are the kinds of scales that you need for every imaging room that has a weight capacity maximum BEFORE you ever put a patient on the table that is questionably at that limit.

But when purchasing a medical grade scale, is there a difference between Mechanical Scales and Digital Scales? The answer is yes.  Digital scales are more reliable than mechanical scales because there’s less room for error. A traditional analog scale has more parts than a digital scale, so there are more parts that can break. There is also, a report by BMC Public Health which discovered that  mechanical scales were incorrect by an average initial weight of 0.95kg. Additionally, mechanical scales can be incorrectly read as a result of human error.  Choosing a digital scale, not only provides precise results, but also negates the opportunity for human error and protects your imaging tables from a potential disaster.
