I Need to Replace My Sponges - HELP!

What do you do when it’s time to replace your old worn out sponges? What’s New? What options are out there?  Well, Z&Z Medical has spent a lot of time doing the research for you and creating an array of foam positioners that you can be comfortable with. Let us help answer some of those difficult questions:

  1. I need to replace my old worn out torn sponges, but I know we can’t have those open cell grey sponges. What should we choose for replacements? We highly recommend Z&Z Medical Exclusive Closed Cell Foam Positioners. These light grey closed cell sponges are manufactured out of a crosslink polyethylene foam that is non-porous, radiolucent, and easy to clean! They are manufactured using a fine micro-cellular structure that is characterized by its firm feel and its resistance to fluids. It has a higher tensile and tear strength compared to most foam products on the market.  These closed cell sponges make the best positioning aides and are manufactured right here in the USA.

  1. Some coated sponges that we have gotten in the past tear easily. What do you suggest as a good “CLEANABLE” sponge replacement that will hold up over time? We recommend Z&Z Medical Exclusive Closed Cell Foam Positioners. There is no need for a thinly applied coating that will easily tear.  The foam itself is closed cell crosslink micro-cellular structure that is non-porous, meaning it will not absorb any fluids unlike the un-coated open cell sponges that are on the market and that tear easily. The crosslink density of this foam is extremely high, and the surface can be easily cleaned & disinfected making them an excellent positioner for any imaging facility.

  1. We had to replace some sponges and we got coated sponges – but they show bad artifacts. What can we get that is cleanable and will pass inspections from a quality control standpoint? We recommend Z&Z Medical Exclusive Closed Cell Foam Positioners. These positioners are amazing and do NOT show any artifacts at all. Closed cell sponges are radiolucent allowing the x-ray to pass right through and not be blocked and there is no chemical coating that will show artifacts during imaging. When used under normal imaging technique, our sponges offer superior image radiolucency and no artifacts.

  1. We need to replace our sponges but have to use a medical grade disinfectant spray to clean them with. What sponge replacement do you recommend? We recommend Z&Z Medical Exclusive Closed Cell Foam Positioners. The surface can easily be cleaned after every patient with a hospital grade medical disinfectant or 10% bleach solution.

Frequently Asked Questions about Our Exclusive Closed Cell Sponges

Z&Z Medical’s Exclusive Closed Cell Sponges are made from a lightweight 100% radiolucent non-porous foam. These positioning sponges are entirely fluid resistant and easy to clean! They are also easy to disinfect with any hospital grade disinfectant and are extremely durable when compared to common open cell sponges on the market today! Our sponges feature a non-coated premium charcoal grey color and are the perfect solution for any positioning need! They can be used in MRI, CT, Nuc Med, Ultrasound and General X-Ray making them the number one option in positioning sponges.  Below are some common frequently asked questions about our new closed cell sponges.

  1. Are there any special storage requirements for closed cell foam? No. Unlike non-coated foam that will change color with exposure to room light, closed cell foam is not affected by room light.  We recommend that you store your sponges in a clean dry area when not in use to prolong the life of your sponges and to keep them clean.
  2. Are closed cell foam positioners easy to rip or tear?Unlike coated open cell foam positioners, closed cell foam is manufactured using a fine micro-cellular structure that is characterized by its firm feel. They have a much higher tensile and tear strength compared to the open cell foam positioners on the market today. Unlike coated foam products that have to be replaced if torn or punctured for infection control reasons, this does not apply to closed cell foam products as the crosslink polyethylene foam is non-porous and resistant to fluid even if punctured or torn.
  3. I’m worried about cleaning them since they are not coated. Should I be worried? No. Closed cell sponges do not need a protective coating. The foam itself is closed cell and non-porous, meaning it will not absorb any fluids unlike the un-coated open cell sponges that are on the market. The crosslink density of this foam is extremely high, and the surface can be easily cleaned & disinfected making them an excellent positioner for any imaging facility.

X-Ray Image Receptors Can Be Contaminated Between Patients

STOP putting patients at risk. Avoid cross-contamination and the spread of germs by utilizing disposable covers that are designed for Radiology Cassettes and Imaging Receptors. Z&Z Medical is your source for X-Ray Cassette Covers and Bags for protection of your x-ray cassettes, CR Cassettes and DR Panels.  Radiography plays a very important role in medical diagnosis, but the equipment and accessories used during imaging bear a considerable risk of harboring nosocomial bacteria which could complicate a patient’s original condition. In one study, the x-ray cassette or imaging receptor recorded the highest number of times that bacteria were seen with coliform being isolated most often. [1]

Another study demonstrated that x-ray cassette surfaces that came in contact with patients were contaminated with MRSA and MRSH. Because x-ray cassettes/image receptors are possible fomites for the transmission of MRSA and other contagious pathogens, the application of contamination barriers were highly recommended. [2]

And yet another article talks about the 2+ million nosocomial infections that occur every year in the USA and the investigation of how long bacteria can survive on an x-ray cassette/image receptor. This investigation verified that common potentially pathogenic bacteria can survive for prolonged periods of time on radiographic imaging receptors and may be transmitted to patients, radiologic technologists, or other health care personnel.[3]

It’s important to stop the spread of infection with disposable cassette and DR panel covers. Since research shows that these imaging plates are a potential source of ross infection, the Diagnostic imaging Departments may be partly responsible for adding to the transference of pathogens around the hospital.[4]  Available in a variety of sizes and closure options, these bags are great for use in the ER, OR, Surgery Centers, CCU, ICU, Mobile Imaging, or anywhere there is a risk for transmitting infection. It’s important to protect your employees from handling contaminated equipment and protect your cassettes and DR panels from any damaging fluid.
